Today was another beautiful day here in Kunming, sunny and warm. We awoke and were gathering in the living room to greet Sarah who was in her usual early morning good mood, when we were given the opportunity to become acquainted with one of the less desirable aspects of life in China. The power went out! It would be out all day.
With no power in the apartment, or our section of the city for that matter, we had to come up with some alternative plans for the morning. The kids decided to introduce us to a new board game they have come to enjoy playing here in China. We spent the morning playing the game "Settlers of Catan". Shawn, David and Marianne had all played it before, Barb and I had not. Barb won!
At lunch time we went with David to have lunch with a young man, "Stephen", who is a friend of David. We went to have Chinese food and while at lunch we heard the wonderful story of how this young man came to faith. In addition to becoming acquainted with this young man, we enjoyed another great meal. After walking home from lunch, we rested and read at the apartment.
At 3:30, with the power still out, we took a cab (one large enough to carry us all) out to the suburbs of Kunming, where we had the chance to visit with and have a meal with a family David and Marianne have known since they were at UNC together. We had a wonderful visit at their home which still had power and shared a fantastic meal. We had met this couple at David and Marianne's wedding and it was awesome to become re-acquainted with them and to see how God has blessed their growing family. At 8:30 we left to return to Kunming and when we got back to the apartment we were grateful to find the power had been restored. It had been a long day but one that we can see allowed us to become acquainted with both life and people in China.
