Easter in China

As I awoke I realized this would be a very special Easter. We would be celebrating the one event in all of history that can give us hope for today and tomorrow. And we would be celebrating it with family in China! We would be leaving for church at 10:00am, going to the service in two cabs. The church, a legal gathering of all foreigners, is held weekly at a hotel in Kunming. To gain entrance you must show a passport since no nationals are allowed to worship with these believers.

We had a light breakfast and got ready to leave. The cab ride cost 10 kwai, that's about $1.30, and we learned that they do not tip in China, it is considered an insult. We entered the hotel and we excited as believers from many different nationalities gathered to worship our risen Lord! The people, some business people, some involved with ministries, some visiting family like us, raised our voices in praise as we remembered first the cross and then the resurrection. A missionary doctor then challenged us with the need to respond in a personal way to the message of the gospel. The 300 plus worshippers then sang a triumphant hymn and went out to serve our risen Savior! (Because of the sensitive nature of some worshipper's work, we were not permitted to take pictures at the church service.)

Following church we returned by cabs to David and Marianne's apartment and prepared for an Easter brunch and easter egg hunt with members of the "company" David and Marianne work for. It was a beautiful day in Kunming and we enjoyed sharing the joy and fellowship of these coworkers of son and daughter-in-law. We held this picnic brunch in the courtyard of the apartment complex where David and Marianne live.
When the brunch concluded, we returned to the apartment and relaxed for the afternoon until David and Marianne announced we would be going out for supper to one of their favorite little Chinese restaurants. We walked to this restaurant and discovered something about the Chinese people, they go out to socialize at night. The streets were teaming with people and vendors as we made our way to this little restaurant. When we arrived we made our way to the 3rd floor and enjoyed a wonderful, authentic Chinese restaurant meal. When finished, we made our way back to the apartment with one very tired little girl who we are absolutely loving being around!
